For the first time for me, a grey heron decided to come close to the hide, and display his wings. The birds clearly knew it was New Year and we photographers needed encouragement. Scientific name: Ardea cinerea

jacob k. suggested that http://www.birdpix.nl/album_page.php?pic_id=340728 would be a better composition if I hadn't placed the swan in the centre. As I am only a beginner, I have taken his advice and posting a similar photo that I could crop to have the neck at 1/3rd in and the head at an intersection of 1/3rd lines. Is it more interesting? Dutch name: Knobbelzwaan
English name: Mute Swan

The lighting was very strange. The swan was brilliant white and the water very dark. The correct exposure for the swan made the water appear black. The white flecks are not dust spots but some small floaters reflecting light. Scientific name: Cygnus olor

It was a very grey day at Rye Meads and not good for photographing the wildfowl. But, just as we were leaving there some reddish afternoon wintry that lit up a Robin in a tree so I swung up my camera to get a perfectly focussed shot through the branches. Scientific name: Erithacus rubecula
