Verdict The EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM IS is a rather mixed bag. Performace-wise things are very fine in the 75-200mm range but the 300mm setting is a little sub-standard. Using a good RAW converter you should be able to rescue things to some degree (see the samples) but critical users should look elsewhere if 300mm is a priority setting. The construction quality is relatively decent. Some may find the AF speed a little on the slow side. The image stabilizer is a great feature and definately a big plus compared to conventional consumer tele zooms - at a price naturally. However, the price tag may also be the reason to look for other, better alternatives. While we haven't tested the just slightly more expensive Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L yet it's a pretty save bet to state that this lens is a much better option both in terms of construction quality and optical performance and at 200mm it is 2/3 stops faster which compensates a little for the lack of an IS. |
