As a Nikon shooter I can say that I am very happy with my Bigma OS. I am pretty sure that if I would have been using Canon I would have bought the 100-400 IS, but the Nikon alternative, the 80-400VR is not a very good lens.

I wanted a 'walkaround' lens with stabilizer, birding reach and fast autofocus and the Bigma OS does not disappoint. Its OS is very effective, the autofocus really IS fast and I am not dissapointed with its sharpness. It is heavy, although I don't have any problems walking around for 6 hours with a 3kg combi (lens + Nikon D300s). The build quality is excellent.

check out this little slideshow on my website: http://www.opdatmoment.nl/pix/Birds/index.html

all those pix were recently shot with the Sigma 50-500 OS.

cheers, Frank

Hi,
I am in complete agreement with fgbd70, for the exact same reasons.
I am a Nikonian as well and often also an "opportunistic" photographer; of late I stopped using a monopod or tripod for this lens. It may be useful to add that I am now working with a great camera, the Nikon D300s, which is also adding to the overall quality and is allowing me to use higher ISO numbers, if needed.

A few very recent results with this combination:

What is wrong with the 80-400VR? The AF is not the quickest but it is certainly not a bad lens.
I'm using the lens for years now and I think if you look at the price/ quality it's a very good lens.

why is this topic in English while the native speaker seems to be Dutch????...de meeste gebruikers hier prefereren Nederlands vermoed ik, maar misschien kunnen we daar eens een topic over openen Wink

I have saw the results with de Sigma 50-500. The Gerard's results looks good with some details. But fgbd70's results looks without enough details. The 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS give more details en a less better image quility. The service from canon is better too than sigma's.

Good luck!
